Shared Ownership in Somerset

Seeking a slower pace? Fancy a slice of rural England? Somerset might just be the answer.

Why buy in Somerset?

It’s a sleepy sort of place – in the best way - with rolling hills, pretty orchards and chocolate box villages. There are Arthurian legends to discover (Glastonbury Abbey is rumoured to be the final resting place of King Arthur and his beloved Guinevere); there’s green and serene countryside; and there’s the sort of pubs you pop into for one local cider, and end up staying for hours, waxing lyrical with your pals and ordering another pint.

It’s the home of Glastonbury – the hippie haven with its eponymous festival and Glastonbury Tor, the famous hill topped by the roofless St Michael's Tower. But Somerset is so much more than cider and juggernaut festivals. There’s beautiful Bath – all gorgeous architecture and thermal waters; there’s the cathedral city of Wells – an intriguing place with thrumming farmers’ markets, a vibrant festival calendar and painstakingly crafted architecture; and a whole host of market towns in-between, like Cheddar with its historic buildings and tearooms. And then there’s the sea-carved coast, peppered with lively resort towns (Weston-super-Mare, Burnham-on-Sea, Minehead), where kids run around the sands, crafting castles and flying kites.

Getting around Somerset is easy too. Rail links are excellent and you can be at London Paddington from Bath in just 90 minutes. Waterloo, Cardiff Central, Portsmouth, Weymouth, and Brighton are just some of the destinations easily reached by rail. The M5 runs through Somerset and connects Bristol with Exeter, plus other major roads criss-cross the county, like the A37 and A38, linking Somerset to Bristol – where you can catch domestic and international flights from Bristol Airport.

Transport connections in Somerset

If you’re worried you won’t be able to stump up the cash for a new home in Somerset, then think again. The region has some fantastic investments up for sale – many available through the government-backed shared ownership scheme. Take Patch Meadows in Somerton - a development of one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes that’s framed with countryside but within walking distance of Somerton town centre and schools.

For commuters, Castle Cary station is just 20 minutes away and has direct services to Bristol, Bath and London. Interiors are serene and pared back, from white-wooden vinyl flooring to neutral kitchens and bathrooms. In the cathedral city of Wells, the fresh development of Bishops Green has sprung up with a focus on families and first-time buyers. Many of the ultra-modern and luxe properties have island kitchens leading to large gardens; and Wells city centre is a short walk away with pubs, restaurants, schools and shops on your doorstep. Over in Yeovil, meanwhile, there’s Bunford Heights – a new plot of homes in a rural idyll just outside of West Coker, which has its own primary school, Post Office, petrol station, butchers, hairdressers and restaurants.
